Daemon Definition
Home / glossary / Daemon

Daemon is a technical term for server software that manages a system or service. Like the software Apache HTTPD (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Daemon), it is used to receive requests, direct traffic, and serve web pages. Unlike programs that you use on your computer like a web browser, a daemon runs in the background out of site. Administrators operate on Daemon programs by running other programs to look at log files or by sending interrupt signals to the process to alter it’s behavior, like reloading a configuration file.
